The human brain is, in my opinion the least understood part of the body. The truth is I do not think other parts of the body are misunderstood, and the brain seems to be very, very difficult to understand. The brain seems to be the most complex thing in the world and therefore least understood. The brain can do so many things and people will never fully understand how and why the brain chooses what it does. No one will ever fully understand how the brain decides what is right or wrong and what is bad and good. No one will understand how the brain chooses to be sad or happy, or how it chooses to be hyper or depressed, why chemicals react the way they do. No one will understand how the brain chooses to believe or not believe.
Medicine has advanced greatly over the years and will continue to advance, the newest technology is a skin cell gun that helps heel burs by placing skin cells on the damaged skin. The have made a serious burn heel in a few days rather than weeks. This new technology shows how medicine advances. ( link to video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXO_ApjKPaI) The advancement of medicine is amazing and medicine can fix any part of the body, that is except for the complex brain. With all the advancements in medicine modern medicine can pretty much fix any thing except for complications in the brain. The brain is the least understood part of the body and is much less understood by modern medicine than other parts of the human body. There have been solutions to some small problems in the brain yet, complex problems in the brain seem to be impossible to fix. The solutions set for parts of the body have solved many problems yet there seem to be little to no solutions to problems in the brain.
To make a retort to your post, much of human anatomy is well understood now, including the brain. Many things that were once mystifying about the brain can be boiled down to chemical reactions and cellular interactions. However, the brain is indeed incredibly complex and it does not do it justice to disregard this aspect of its nature.
ReplyDeletei feel as though that to us, as students we are still fairly in the dark regarding the brain. As doctors, scientists and what not know exactly how the brain works i feel that we dont spend enough time, if not any at all about the brain in biology and any other bio related class provided by the school. being students, i feel that the only way to really find out how the brain truly works is through research done on ones own time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all parties here. The brain is quite complex, and understanding the mechanisms behind the brain's functionality is not quite the same things as understanding exactly what makes the brain tick. Self-awareness is a trait that is distinct to the animal world; humans are the most self-aware of all. Why might that be? Explaining the chemical processes of the brain is an insufficient way to answer this question.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it really seems like modern doctors do not fully understand the brain. Not only do they not completely understand how to heal damage to the brain or personality defects, but they do not entirely understand what certain parts of the brain do either. For example, (according to my psychology teacher, Mr. Sullivan) scientists are not completely sure what the function of the cerebellum is. They only know that it controls balance to some degree. That just shows how far we still have to go before completely understand the brain
