DEATH OF A SALES MAN THEMES OF ACT 1

The play titled The Death of a Salesman reviles three main themes in the first act. From the start of the play a reader can see themes begin to develop. The most obvious theme is the theme of the American Dream. The idea behind the American Dream is that men were supposed to succeed and lead of life of great success and ownership, ownership of a house, car, family, and advancement from nothing to great success. The theme of the American dream directly comes out when the reader notices that Willey has tried his entire life to obtain this American Dream. He started with nothing, and bought a house and car and tried his best to obtain a successful job and family but instead he turned out to be a failure and his sons also turned out to be lacking in their abilities.

The second major theme presented in the play is the theme of man vs. self. This theme presents itself with the great misfortune of Willy. Willy’s fight to obtain success has lead him to fight a constant battle with himself ever since the start of the play and even before. His hopes for his children and expectations from himself leads him to go a little crazy and losses the battle with himself, showed by his attempts at suicide. His life has become miserable and he wishes to do whatever he can to benefit his family. Willy’s constant stride to achieve success leads him to lose the battle between inside of him which declines his health.

The third main theme provided in the first act of the play is the theme of man vs. society. Willy’s life is full of impressions on him. He is a sales man and therefore must be well liked. His struggle to support his family leads his ties with society to strain. He has outdone his job and is declining in the company. He was at one point a man of respect but is now laughed at and cannot understand why. His impression of what people think of him has become unclear with laughter he hears behind his back. This theme of man vs. society clearly reflects how society reacts on his inability to quit working.

Fast Blog

Well its 11:49 and i just remembered we have to do a blog... or do we? I do not remember what was said in class about the issue. 10 minutes to write a blog lets see if I am up to it. First thing on my mind is the tree. it looked a little better this week but still does not live up to its beauty in the past month.  Another thing i remember talking about is leeches. They are definitely not good for you in any way shape or form. Nothing that sucks ones blood is. A leech was used in the past but i think modern science overcomes that unskilful tactic of fighting a disease or sickness.

Also teacher appreciation is a thought on my mind. Well all, no most of my teachers in high school have been awesome picking one was really hard. I wanted to write to two but I did not or do not have enough time. Teachers make themselves good or bad. A good teacher can openly talk to the students in a serious or joking matter, a bad teacher cannot. I think thats what the difference  is. Also a good teacher can get things done in a timely bu fun matter. When there is a plan of what to do for one day the teacher should complete it most of the time unless  another topic came up that benifites the class, a teacher should be able to tell the difference between a good and bad topic.

Also a teacher should never jump to conclusions. if they do the student will lose respect  for them. one thing I dont think some teachers realize is that they must gain the students respect. The teacher must do this before joking around to tell the class that they mean buisness. one last thing for this week. A teacher must keep the class interested no matter what. If you lose attention it is not necessarly the students fault it means they are not interested in what you have to say. if students talk that means they are distracted, a teacher can either eliminate the distraction or find a way to lead it back to the topic on hand.tell me what you think  and see you next time

The fall

The new season is in. Yes it is fall but who really likes this season? Especially this year when its already so so cold. This season teases us about the past summer and says "oo ya summers over now you have to wake up every day and go to school". The fall is kind of a horrible place when you think about it.

People say that the fall is a beautiful time, "the views are amazing" they say. But the fall ruins what it created. The views it created and beauty it created it also destroys it. What am i talking about I'll tell you. Look at the tree right in front of the English class we are in. It used to be a beauty. The contrast of colors that the new season created was truly beautiful. it looked kind of like this: Tree1.jpg image by MNGirlyGirl
but better. Many people in class witnessed the site of such natural beauty. But as time passed it changed and looked kind of like this

and who wants to look at this.

The fall does create natural beauty but after the beauty it destroys it. The fall teases the individual about the changing weather. It teases about the coming weather if not being cold outside for itself. Like today for example it was freezing. The coming of the winter known as fall  really is not a good time. This year has also been cold ruining the only good thing about the fall. The coldness will ruin the trick or treaters time outside. It will hopefully not be so cold, but if it is anything like tonight I will be upset. The fall provides little to no excitement for me and I really do not  feel much excitement in this fall. other than Halloween especially this year.

Doing Blogs

When I found out that we have to do blogs in English class I was kind of hoping Mr. B would drop the idea. When he did not do so I figured that I  would hate doing them. But MR. B proved me wrong. The only bad part is coming up with something to write about. After that its a breeze to do the blog. When a person gets to choose what they write about and get to do it weekly I think they become a better writer inside. Also since we have to some up with our own ideas it makes it easier to write the start of essays that have assigned topics.

When I did my first few blogs I did not like it because I had to write about something in assigned and it took a long time. But now that we get to choose our own topics once you choose one you fly through writing it. I also like it that we get our ideas out on topics we discussed in class. Say you thought of something to add to the discussion you can blog about it and MR. B will see your thought on the subject. Also if you did not contribute to the discussion heres your place to make up for it because anyone can see this. Also i like it that Mr. B has his own blog that we can read. It makes it that everyone can see what he thinks about certain topics and whats on his mind so we have an opportunity to bet some background on info maybe he did not have time to tell us in class.

One other thing I like about blogs is reading other peoples. When I go and read a blog I get to see what that individual is thinking about. When i see there ideas i get to change mine or make new ones if i did not have an opinion on that certain subject or matter. These blogs help us students connect because we can agree or disagree and talk it out even on the blog. These blogs help us connect and become a better class as a whole specially when we read a person's that we don't know that well because we can see there ideas and agree or disagree. We learn alot about each other from these blogs and i don't completely hate ding them that much anymore. The only thing I hate is that  they have to be up by a certain time because sometimes i fall asleep and am forced to do them late.

Stupid Decisions

As humans no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. From simple and not affecting anyone to drastic and affecting the lives and well being of not only yourself but the lives of others. How does this relate to class well in the crucible John Proctor. My friend Proctor made the horrible mistake of cheating  on his wife, not only is that a sin but after when she starts rumors about witchcraft he decides to save his name and not say anything. Thus causing many people to put shame to their name by admitting to something they didn't do but also causing many innocent to be hanged because they don not admit to a crime.

That may be a very extreme example but what about when you do something without thinking. Say someone tells you to do something and you do it then you realize what you just did and they are laughing at you. It may be funny but how stupid do you feel? I know it happens to me and I know I do it to people all the time because it gives me a good laugh.

What about when no one is around and you find something. You pick it up and then realize it was a bad idea what do you do? Or when you do something and then realize it was dumb. What happens when you get caught doing these things that could be bad? You cant just say "Ohh i thought it was wrong after I did it" even if you are telling the truth you still get in trouble. You may do stuff by accident and then realize what you did can't you ?

This last thing really annoys me. When you forget to do something and later remember that you forgot. Say you honestly forgot to do your homework it not like you still get full credit. But when teachers forget to do something they do not lose pay. Why should we lose credit? What about when you did it but forgot to bring it in? that really annoys me. Are we not human should we all be perfect? Why did I forget to do my blog till now ? This is all tell me what you guys think

On The Mind: Fear and Love

Well in class we talked about love and fear, but one thing I do not think we went into too much depth about was how they are motivatotors. We got a great explanation from a studnet that fear and love branched off into all other emotions. Like fear branches into Psycopathy, Antipathy, and Apathy. Love branches off into Empathy, Sympathy, and Theopathy. But we never really talked about how both love and fear are both the strongest motivators of all.

Fear as a motivation is maybe the strongest motivator and one may argue that fear is the only motivator. That fear combines all other motivators into one. But in my opinion love and fear are two different motivators. Fear moves some people to do extraordinary things, things people could not or would not normally do. For example fear of failing a class leads you to stay up, study, do homework and so on. Fear of a dog makes you run faster than you normally can. But why? To tell the truth I have no idea why. No one can be positive why. Why do we no why can we do things like keep our selvs awake or run that little bit faster to get away. Some maybe able to answer this question with religon or science but where di we know what is right.

Love maybe a motivation all alone. When you love someone you are motivated to impress that person, to make that person love you back, make youself better for your significant other is this not motivation? Motivation by way of love maybe the strongest. Although I do not believe that I have ever truely loved someone, love is a strong word. In my opinion I am not old enough to love. I do not think anyone my age is old enough for love although some may think they have loved what do they define love as? To talk about Romeo and Juliet who were around 13 or 14 were they old enough to love? I guess love is based on opinion but one thing people cannot argue that it is a motivator. What is your opinion? What is love? What about fear? What is the best motivator?

On my Mind: Knocking on A Door

Illegal imigration to the United States has always been a problem, but I never really thought about it until it came up in my history class. We debated the new Nebrasken immagration law, weather it was a good or bad law to make. Although at first I thought I would be on the anti side about the law it turnes out that I really believe that the law is fair. After the topic came up in our English class I decided to share my knowlege about the law with my peers and state my opininions. Also because this topic is on my mind.

The Nebrasken immigration law simply states that people in the state have to carry proof that they are American citizens and the police have the right to ask for proof of citizenship. This law has kicked up A LOT of controversy because people beleive that the copst that enforce this law will perdudice. There are a lot of different view points that come up in this argument but they keep on going back and forth. There is a single analige that sums up my view point.

This analige something like this: When someone knocks on the door of a house they are let in, this is very different than breaking through the window and entering. The knocking on the door resembles getting into America legally, breaking in the window is illegally. This sums up my opinion of this law. Two people could argue for hours over whats right and wrong but in the end the immigrants are illegal. By "breaking into" the country they are breaking the system and ruining chances of others to get in. Action must be taken
Immediately to remove them. What do you guys and girls think am I wrong. Is there something you can arguee with me about, because my team won the debate. haha.

The Puritan Dream

Many people come to the United States Of America in hopes of fulfilling a dream they have. One thing most people that come to the United States have in common is that they wish for freedom. Many groups have come thought history for freedom. Two of the first and most recognized groups to come to the United States for this idea freedom are the Pilgrims and the Puritans, both coming to set up a community. Although the two groups are very  similar in why they came to America they took drastically different views in history. The Puritans have become one of the most hated groups in American history as the Pilgrims became known for thanksgiving and friendliness. Although the Puritans are hated in history they undoubtedly contributed to the American Dream.

The American Dream has many different meanings to different people, and everyone thinks about it in a different way. Today the dream is much different than when the the idea of the American Dream began, even though one can not say when it actually began. Many ideas contribute to the American Dream but the most important idea is the idea of freedom. This idea began in America when the Puritans came here for freedom of religion. One can say that the Puritans gave off the idea that there should be a dream, they wanted freedom to set up a community with freedom to believe in what they wanted. This thought that people should be able to believe in what they wanted to was their contribution to the American Dream.

When the Puritans tried to fulfill this dream they failed. Their ideas and morals got messed up and instead of making a compact small community, they spread and illegally took land from the Indians. This is the first reason they are so hated. They claimed to want to convert Indians when they actually killed them and took there land. They wanted religious freedom but made a set religion for their group. They adapted some of the ways of church that they claimed to be negative. They became hypocrites, and arrogant. They "not only made it difficult for the people who lived among them; they made it impossible for anyone to live alongside them". The Puritans landed in Mass Bay in 1630 and by the seventeenth century the original Puritan Dream no longer existed. " Their dream of a city upon a hill became an empire on a continent". So when the question, if they deserve there reputation in history, arises I say, yes they completely deserve what they got. Not only did they lie to everyone they killed innocent people. The Puritans did contribute to the basis of the American Dream but they came way to short of their dream of freedom. The only thing they did contribute was the idea they deserve no more credit than that.

The Chammas Family and The American Dream

The American Dream can have different meanings to different people, but the basics of this dream are all similar. All the ideas of what this dream mean tie into self-improvement. No matter what, a "dream" is a wanting of something  (or somebody). The American dream combines many dreams to form a big dream that for some people is a necessity and others do not pay attention to it. The American dream has affected my family in many ways and only started about 20 years ago.
It was about 20 yeas ago that my father moved to America, and it was not easy for him. My father began working when he was around 12 and has worked every in his life since then. He worked with his father in roofing and tiling. After a few years when he was around 16 he moved to Kweit where he worked in anything he could find. After many difficult years of hard labor he finally got his green card and passport and was able to move to the United States, beginning his American Dream. It was not easy but my father learned English and began working. He finally bought his own Gas Station and on a trip back to Lebanon met my mother they got married. After returning to America as a new husband my parents began a family. First came my sister Wadad, then Marilyn, then me, then Tony, then Nancy and finally Jacob. In my opinion my father did in-fact Achieve his American dream because he has a Family, has a car, a job, a house, an income, friends, and most importantly life, liberty, and prosperity.
My father began with little to nothing and he worked hard and grew as a person. He made a living in America and has set up for his children to do the same. He is strict when it comes to school and expects we do are best. With his help I am setting up to build my own American dream and progressing through it. My brothers and sisters do the same and one day we will to be setting up a dream for our children as the cycle of life continues and the meaning of tis American dream continues to change.
