On my Mind: Knocking on A Door

Illegal imigration to the United States has always been a problem, but I never really thought about it until it came up in my history class. We debated the new Nebrasken immagration law, weather it was a good or bad law to make. Although at first I thought I would be on the anti side about the law it turnes out that I really believe that the law is fair. After the topic came up in our English class I decided to share my knowlege about the law with my peers and state my opininions. Also because this topic is on my mind.

The Nebrasken immigration law simply states that people in the state have to carry proof that they are American citizens and the police have the right to ask for proof of citizenship. This law has kicked up A LOT of controversy because people beleive that the copst that enforce this law will perdudice. There are a lot of different view points that come up in this argument but they keep on going back and forth. There is a single analige that sums up my view point.

This analige something like this: When someone knocks on the door of a house they are let in, this is very different than breaking through the window and entering. The knocking on the door resembles getting into America legally, breaking in the window is illegally. This sums up my opinion of this law. Two people could argue for hours over whats right and wrong but in the end the immigrants are illegal. By "breaking into" the country they are breaking the system and ruining chances of others to get in. Action must be taken
Immediately to remove them. What do you guys and girls think am I wrong. Is there something you can arguee with me about, because my team won the debate. haha.

  1. Although I feel that immigration is the core to our economy these days, because there are not many people out there that are american citizens who will work foor 12 hours a day and get payed below minimum wage for jobs with poor working conditions. I never thought of illegal immigration that way and now i kind of agree with your opinion that they are essentially "breaking and entering" into our country.

P.S. i think its the Arizona immigration law

  2. I agree with you Wadih. I don't think that illegal immigrants should have rights in this country, because they broke the law to come here. I also like your analogy about breaking into someone's house it really makes you look at immigration in a different way.

  3. Wadih, I totally agree with you. I feel like to live here you should be legal or else your taking away opportunities for everyone else who came here fairly. Your analogy made the situation of immigration even more clear. Although some may disagree with your opinion of immigration, I agree that more laws should be enforced like that law to decrease immigration rates.

  4. Hmmm...Let's not all jump to conclusions here. This is a complicated and nebulous area of the law. Our nation was founded by immigrants and there is a long immigrant tradition, dating back to the Puritans, as a matter of fact. Legal immigrants are the lifeblood of American economic growth; the minute the population stops rising, the minute our nation goes into a decline. Immigration has long been a highly important contributor to the American way of life, and will continue to be in the future.

The Arizona law is interesting for three reasons. First, it is an example of a state asserting its right to enforce its own borders, even when the federal (national) government does not agree. Contentiousness between states and the central government goes back all the way to the founding of our country, when certain states were reluctant to sign a constitution that gave the federal government too much power.

The second way that the Arizona immigration bill is relevant is that our government is quite insolvent at the moment, with our national debt mounting at an astronomical rate. People argue that illegal immigrants, who do not pay taxes, should not be eligble for certain services such as social security and medicare, as they do not pay into the system and therefore the system is losing money. This is quite controversial.

Finally, there is the security argument, which states that national security is at risk when it is possible for undocumented persons from other nations are free to walk across the border and settle in the United States. In the post-9/11 world, this is certainly a hot-button issue.

All in all, it is a fascinating issue to debate.

  5. I completely agree with you that it is controversial but after everything i have learned about this topic I do not agree with you that it is essential. There is a long long list of people who would love to get into this country legally and wait there turn. these people also do the jobs that immigrants do and this is an other topic i do not agree with, true illegal immigrants usually have the worst jobs but thats because they choose to come here for these jobs. people that actually are citizens will accept these jobs and by doing so the employer will have to offer a higher pay helping our poor economy. The people that come here illegally may save up money and then send it home, or leave america and take it back to their home country this is not beneficial to our economy. by coming to the country illegally that one person sets back a whole line of people who are waiting to get here legally making it unfair for them. this is a hot topic and there are many sides to the argument but i feel it is unfair that people cut the line, they are not better than the people who wait to get in. arguments can go on forever, and everyone has their own opinion but this immigration is not like the past this is only beneficial to the person who immigrates here the past immigrants started a country. they started America. this is not the same

sorry about my spelling and grammar i have a lot of homework i thought i should just defend my point of view. and when i say this is a hot topic it really is and this could really get people mad but this is my opinion and provides a opinion of others to look at. Sorry if i offended anyone but again this is MY opinion

  6. i like the fact that you said that the immigrants make the money, save it and then bring it back to their home country, and this makes a valid point because essentially the money made in the united states leaves the united states to help some other countries economy. For us to keep our economy up we have to keep the money circulating within our country and bring more money into the country rather then sending it out for other countries benefits. Im not saying illegal immigrants are bad, i dont have enough solid data and facts to make such a judgement, but i just thought that the point wadih had brought up was a good one.
